RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Forest and land fires have burned 396.13 hectares in Nabire Regency, Central Papua, damaging vegetation and directly affecting local residents. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that at least four households in Central Papua now require emergency assistance from a joint response team.
Acting head of BNPB’s Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center, Berton S.P. Panjaitan, said the fires affected seven districts in Nabire between 18 July and 23 August 2026.
“The fires are suspected to have been triggered by hot weather, strong winds, and the abundance of dry shrubs and grass in the area,” he said in Jakarta on Monday, 24 August 2026.
Berton said that, based on data collected by the Nabire Regency Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), the seven affected areas were Teluk Kimi, Nabire City, West Nabire, Wanggar, Nabire, Makimi, and Yaur Subdistricts.
BNPB’s Directorate of Operations Control confirmed that four households had been directly affected by the incident. They are currently receiving assistance from a joint team coordinated by the Nabire BPBD.
He said that, as of Sunday, 23 August 2026, several fire hotspots had yet to be extinguished because their locations could not be reached by ground-based firefighting units.
As reported by Antara, Nabire Regency Administration has submitted an urgent request for assistance from the central government. The requested support includes the deployment of water-bombing helicopters and additional firefighting vehicles to tackle fires in difficult terrain.
“Some fire hotspots have yet to be extinguished because they cannot be reached by firefighting units. Further support is needed in the form of water bombing and additional firefighting vehicles,” he said. ***
