RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait, Lampung, recorded a sequence of six consecutive volcanic eruptions between Monday morning and early afternoon on August 24, 2026, spewing grey-to-black ash columns between 200 and 250 meters above its peak.
According to data from the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), the eruptive sequence began at 9.41 a.m. local time and continued through 11.22 a.m., with ash clouds drifting west and northwest. Seismographs recorded maximum amplitudes ranging from 49 to 53 millimeters during the separate events.
Volcano monitoring authorities reaffirmed that Mount Anak Krakatau remains at Level III (Alert), strictly prohibiting tourists, fishers, climbers, and local residents from engaging in any activities within a 3-kilometer safety radius of the active crater.
Geological and disaster mitigation agencies urged the public and maritime operators to maintain a safe distance from the active volcanic complex as eruptive tremors persist. Acting Head of the Geological Agency Lana Saria provided details regarding the continuous volcanic activity observed at the site.
"The Geological Agency detected six consecutive eruptions starting from 9.41 a.m. to 11.22 a.m. local time, generating thick ash columns drifting toward the west and northwest, the highest ash plumes reached 250 meters above the peak, with maximum amplitudes recorded up to 53 millimeters," she said in Jakarta on Monday, August 24, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Lana emphasized the necessity of strict adherence to established safety perimeters while the volcano remains unstable.
"Mount Anak Krakatau remains under Level III Alert status, we strongly advise the public, visitors, tourists, and climbers against approaching the volcano or conducting any activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the active crater," Lana added. ***
