RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Residents of the Cilincing Fishing Port community in North Jakarta celebrated the 81st anniversary of Indonesia's independence with a flag-raising ceremony, a traditional costume parade, and various competitions. Organized under the North Jakarta Regional Leadership Council of the Indonesian Traditional Fisherfolk Union (KNTI), the activities aimed to strengthen togetherness and solidarity among fishing communities.

The Independence Day celebrations on Monday, August 17, 2026, were held in the coastal area and involved residents from various neighborhoods. In addition to attending the flag-raising ceremony, residents wore traditional clothing and took part in activities adapted to the coastal community’s way of life.

Following the ceremony and traditional costume parade, the festivities continued with competitions that made use of the surrounding environment. Residents participated in panjat pinang air, or a water pole-climbing contest, and a pillow-fighting competition, creating a relaxed atmosphere that involved both children and adults.

Chairperson of the North Jakarta Regional Leadership Council of the KNTI, Jenny, said the activities provided residents with an opportunity to strengthen ties among one another. She said the Independence Day celebration was not merely an annual event but also an opportunity to build a stronger sense of community among local fishers.

“We want residents to become more united. In the future, progress should not be limited to physical development. The welfare and justice of fishers must also truly be realized,” said Jenny in Jakarta on Monday, August 17, 2026.

The celebration was held for the second consecutive year and involved more than residents organized according to neighborhood administrative boundaries. People gathered as part of the Cilincing fishing community to celebrate Independence Day while strengthening social ties in the coastal area.

For fishing communities, togetherness is an essential part of daily life, which is closely connected to activities at sea and in the coastal environment. The Independence Day celebration was therefore also used to reaffirm the importance of mutual assistance and maintaining unity among residents. (Annaila Azzahra-EN)
