Aceh Tamiang Develops Melon Farming to Revive Post-Disaster Economy

RRI.CO.ID, Aceh Tamiang - Cultivation of premium melon varieties such as Golden Alisha F1 and New Madesta has suddenly become the new favorite in the agribusiness sector of Aceh Tamiang Regency, Aceh Province. Utilizing a 1,800-square-meter plot, the harvest from these local farmers was immediately snapped up by nearby residents at IDR 20,000 (USD 1.25) per kilogram, without needing to rely on distributor agents.
“This melon development is promising for increasing farmers’ income, especially in the current post-flood conditions,” said Acting Head of the Aceh Tamiang Agriculture, Livestock, and Plantations Agency, Irwan Hadi, in Aceh Tamiang on Thursday, August 14, 2026.
According to him, the success of melon cultivation development has been demonstrated by the Melon Mutiara Farmer Group in Tanjung Seumantoh Village, Karang Baru Subdistrict, Aceh Tamiang Regency. “The farmer group successfully harvested golden variety melons at a relatively high selling price,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
Currently, Irwan Hadi noted that many farmers in Aceh Tamiang are recovering through the horticulture sector. They are planting premium New Madesta green melons and Golden Alisha F1 melons. These two melon varieties are disease-resistant and have high market value.
“Looking ahead, we hope there will be a melon farming system using greenhouse technology so that farmers become more prosperous and can serve as an example for other young farmers,” said Irwan Hadi.
Meanwhile, Chairperson of the Melon Mutiara Farmer Group, Beni Fauzi, said his group began harvesting melons on Wednesday, August 12, 2026. This harvest marked the first since the flood disaster in Aceh Tamiang Regency.
“Before the disaster, we had sown melon seeds, but everything was submerged by the flood along with the planting media. However, we rose again and replanted until we finally achieved this first harvest,” he said.
Beni Fauzi conveyed that the melon plants cultivated totaled 150 stems. The planted area reached 1,800 square meters, with a target first harvest of 2.5 tons.
He mentioned that the Melon Mutiara Farmer Group is a corporate social responsibility (CSR) program of Pertamina EP Rantau. The farmer group consists of 21 members. Group members, he said, are responsible for plant care ranging from seedling, watering, and fertilizing, with guidance from technical mentors.
“The melon harvest results are marketed directly to local residents and consumers who place orders. We do not sell to distributor agents because local community demand is relatively high. The selling price is Rp20,000 per kilogram,” said Beni Fauzi. ***
