  • Nabire Regency is using Inpari Arumba red rice as part of efforts to reduce stunting and improve community nutrition.
  • The administration has allocated 15 tons of biofortified rice in 2026 for nutritional assistance.

RRI.CO.ID, Nabire - The Nabire Regency Administration in Central Papua is relying on Inpari Arumba red rice, a nutrient-rich, high-antioxidant, and low-sugar variety, to accelerate the reduction of stunting rates in the region. Through the Food Security Agency, the administration has allocated the procurement of 15 tons of this biofortified rice in 2026 as intensive food assistance for 122 children identified as stunted, as well as for pregnant and breastfeeding women across 15 districts.

Head of the Nabire Regency Food Security Agency, Yasor Victor Sawo, said that to date, his office has procured four tons of biofortified rice from local farmers’ production. “In 2026, we have allocated the procurement of 15 tons. Four tons have already been procured,” he said in Nabire on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

Yasor explained that the harvest of biofortified rice cultivated in Nabire has not yet met procurement needs, so part of the rice will be sourced from outside the region. He noted that this year’s production from the pilot fields yielded only about 12 tons of biofortified rice due to drought and water limitations.

“Under normal conditions, our projection is six tons per hectare. That means five hectares should yield 30 tons, but last time we only achieved 40 percent, or around 12 tons,” he said, as quoted by Antara.

He explained that the procured rice will be packaged in special containers bearing the Nabire Regency Administration logo before being distributed to beneficiaries. The assistance will be directed toward interventions for 122 children located in stunting hotspots across 15 districts, based on data from the Nabire Regency Health Agency.

He added that the rice allocation will be distributed in stages to beneficiaries, with each recipient receiving 10 kilograms per month over several distribution rounds.

In addition to stunted children, the program is also aimed at supporting nutritional interventions through community health posts (Posyandu) in stunting hotspots, including for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

He said that the Inpari Arumba red rice variety being developed has nutritional and antioxidant content along with low sugar levels, making it suitable for supporting the fulfillment of nutritious food needs.

Previously, the Nabire Regency Administration conducted the first harvest of Inpari Arumba biofortified rice on July 29, 2026, from a five-hectare demonstration plot in Bumi Raya Village, West Nabire District.

The development of this biofortified rice is part of the local administration’s efforts to strengthen food security while improving the quality of community food consumption. ***
