RRI.CO.ID, Lumajang - Mount Semeru, located on the border of Lumajang and Malang Regencies in East Java, experienced eight consecutive eruptions on Tuesday morning, August 11, 2026, generating ash plumes rising up to 800 meters above the peak.
According to the Center for Volcanology and Geological Mitigation (PVMBG), the initial eruption occurred at 4.39 a.m. local time, producing a thick white-to-gray volcanic ash column spewing southeast. Seismographs recorded a maximum amplitude of 19 millimeters and a duration of 132 seconds for the first eruption. Subsequent eruptions occurred at 4.56 a.m., 5.16 a.m., 5.54 a.m., 6.30 a.m., 6.56 a.m., 7.37 a.m., and 8.23 a.m., with the final morning eruption spewing ash 700 meters above the summit (4,376 meters above sea level).
Semeru Volcano remains at Level III (Alert) status. Volcanologists have prohibited all human activity within a 5-kilometer radius of the crater due to the threat of incandescent rock projectiles, as well as along the Besuk Kobokan river corridor up to 13 kilometers from the peak. Additionally, residents are warned to stay at least 500 meters clear of riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan due to potential pyroclastic flows and cold lava flows extending up to 17 kilometers.
Volcanological monitoring personnel emphasized that residents along nearby river valleys must maintain high vigilance for secondary volcanic hazards. Mount Semeru Observation Post Officer Dany Erlangga Yosa Putra detailed the safety parameters and risk corridors surrounding the active volcano.
"We recommend that the public refrain from any activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan up to 13 kilometers from the summit," Semeru Volcano Observation Post Officer Dany Erlangga Yosa Putra stated in a written report on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
