East Java BPBD Strengthens Efforts to Extinguish Wildfires in Mount Bromo Area

RRI.CO.ID, Surabaya - The East Java Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has intensified efforts to deal with forest and land fires in the Mount Bromo area by deploying a water-spraying drone, a firefighting truck, and joint personnel.
Head of the East Java BPBD, Gatot Soebroto, said the fire was first reported on Monday, August 3, 2026, at around 5 p.m. Jakarta time in the Ranu Pani area of Probolinggo Regency. “The fire was extinguished for a while the following day, but it reignited in the afternoon and has continued until now,” said Gatot on Thursday, August 6, 2026.
He explained that the joint team had implemented two firefighting strategies. At the base of the cliff, personnel were operating a 150-liter water-spraying drone and a water tanker owned by the East Java BPBD.
“Meanwhile, at the top of the cliff, joint personnel are carrying out manual firefighting by beating down the flames with branches,” he said.
The East Java BPBD has also deployed a firefighting vehicle and an L300 vehicle carrying a water tank to support water supplies at the site. Based on data from the East Java BPBD’s Emergency Operations Control Center (Pusdalops), the area affected by the fire was estimated to have reached approximately 70 hectares as of Thursday. The burned vegetation included mountain casuarina, mentigen, acacia, and shrubs.
“So far, there have been no reports of fatalities,” said Gatot.
As part of the response, the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Center (TNBTS) is continuing to close parts of the Mount Bromo tourist area. The closure includes access routes from Malang Regency and Lumajang Regency and will remain in effect until further notice.
The East Java BPBD, together with the Probolinggo Regency BPBD, Malang Regency BPBD, TNBTS, forest rangers, the Indonesian Military (TNI), the National Police (Polri), and volunteers. This joint operation also involves active support from both the Probolinggo Regency and Malang Regency BPBD teams.
“The East Java BPBD continues to coordinate with TNBTS, the Probolinggo Regency BPBD, the Malang Regency BPBD, forest rangers, and volunteers to accelerate response efforts and field monitoring. Weather conditions at the site are currently partly cloudy,” he said.
To strengthen the response, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is scheduled to provide support in the form of a helicopter from Palangka Raya. The helicopter will be used for aerial firefighting operations. (Annaila Azzahra-EN)
