Landfill Fire in Klaten Affects 1,485 Residents with Thick Smoke

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - An area of 1,000 square meters at the Troketon Final Disposal Site (TPA) in Klaten Regency, Central Java, was burned and blanketed nearby residential areas with thick smoke. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said the terraced structure of the waste piles at the site accelerated the spread of smoke, which reached two nearby villages, such as Kaligawe and Kalangan.
The landfill fire in Troketon Village, Pedan Subdistrict, directly affected 473 households, or around 1,485 people. BNPB Head of the Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, said the thousands of residents were affected by the spread of thick smoke.
“The fire engulfed waste piles about 10 meters high with a terraced structure, spreading thick smoke into residential areas,” he said in an official statement in Jakarta on Monday, August 3, 2026.
Abdul explained that the fire broke out in a 1,000-square-meter waste area on Saturday afternoon, August 1, 2026. In response, the Klaten Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) immediately deployed firefighting units to the scene to carry out a rapid assessment and isolate the blaze.
As reported by Antara, the intensive firefighting operation also involved personnel from the Klaten and Sukoharjo fire departments, the military, police, the Environmental Agency, the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), and local volunteer organizations.
Thanks to the quick response of the joint team on the ground, he said, the fire that burned the Troketon landfill piles was completely extinguished on Sunday, August 2, 2026.
BNPB’s Operations Control Directorate said the most urgent needs at present are masks to prevent respiratory problems and logistical support for firefighting personnel.
