RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - As Indonesia's largest city, Jakarta is served by a wide range of public transportation options, including both road-based and rail-based systems. However, according to the TomTom Traffic Index 2025, Jakarta was ranked the 25th most congested city in the world, indicating that efforts to address traffic congestion are still far from complete.

This is something that Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (MRT Jakarta), the Jakarta provincial government-owned company that operates the city's metro system of the same name, appears to recognize. Rather than acting solely as a rail operator, MRT Jakarta sees its mandate from the provincial government as driving urban mobility through public transportation, with one of its key goals being to encourage private vehicle users to switch to public transit.

"With the MRT, we want to encourage people to shift from using private vehicles to public transportation," Head of TOD Planning and Development at MRT Jakarta, Sagita Devi, said during a session of the MRT Jakarta Fellowship Program 2026 in Jakarta on Thursday, July 30, 2026.

Since the opening of the North–South Line in 2019—the only MRT Jakarta line currently in operation—major public transport hubs have emerged across the stations. The most prominent is the Dukuh Atas area in Central Jakarta, located in between the iconic Hotel Indonesia Roundabout and Jakarta's main business district, where the MRT's Dukuh Atas Station is located.

Besides MRT, is already served by Sudirman Station of the commuter rail services KRL Commuter Line's Cikarang Loop Line, BNI City Station of the Soekarno–Hatta Airport Commuter Line, the Galunggung and Dukuh Atas bus stops of TransJakarta bus rapid transit, and—about 400 meters to the southeast—Dukuh Atas Station on the Jabodebek Light Rail Transit (LRT). Jakarta's other light rail system, Jakarta LRT, also plans to build a station in the same area.

As the area is intended for a transit-oriented development (TOD), MRT Jakarta considers pedestrian connectivity essential for making transfers between these transport modes easier. This is especially important because General Sudirman Avenue and the West Flood Canal—a Dutch colonial-era canal built for flood control—divide the district into four separate quadrants that need to be connected.

A giant ring-shaped pedestrian bridge was officially announced on June 21, 2026, as the solution to this connectivity challenge. Named the Dukuh Atas Pedestrian Deck, the bridge is primarily intended to directly link Sudirman and BNI City stations, as well as the future Jakarta LRT station, making transfers between public transport modes much more convenient.

"Once this deck is built, travel times will be reduced for both public transport users and pedestrians in the area, making journeys more comfortable and enjoyable," Advisor to the Program Management Office Division at MRT Jakarta, Agus Trihan, said during the same event.

The Dukuh Atas Pedestrian Deck is planned to have a 100-meter diameter and stand 8 meters high, featuring glass walls around its perimeter. The structure will include three escalators and three elevators distributed across four access points, making it more accessible for pedestrians with disabilities.

"We're currently in the contractor tender process. Hopefully the contractor will come on board in November. Our target is to complete construction by the end of 2028," Agus said.

The pedestrian deck will be located near several major office complexes, including the headquarters of state-owned bank BNI, with its iconic Wisma 46 skyscraper. Although the initial renderings do not show the deck directly connected to any surrounding buildings, MRT Jakarta said that direct links to nearby developments remain a possibility.
