Jembrana Supports Local Traditions via Free Mass Ngaben Event

RRI.CO.ID, Negara – The Mass Ngaben Atma Wedana Free Program initiated by the Jembrana Regency Administration in Bali has once again received a positive response from the public. Hundreds of participants from various subdistricts joined the series of rites, which were centered at Yeh Kuning Indigenous Village Field, Jembrana Subdistrict on Tuesday night, July 28, 2026.
Ngaben is a traditional ceremony for cremation and purifying the souls (atma) of deceased ancestors in Balinese and Javanese Hinduism, conducted collectively by multiple families or community members.
The program is one of the flagship initiatives of Jembrana Regent and Deputy Regent I Made Kembang Hartawan and I Gede Ngurah Patriana Krisna. It is considered capable of easing the financial burden on the community in carrying out Pitra Yadnya ceremonies.
Jembrana Regent, I Made Kembang Hartawan, attended the event in person together with Jembrana Provincial Legislative Council Speaker, Ni Made Sri Sutharmi. On that occasion, the regent reaffirmed the local administration’s commitment to ensuring that all residents can fulfill their customary and religious obligations without being hindered by financial constraints.
“Through this program, we want to help the community carry out ceremonies for their ancestors properly. Tradition and culture remain preserved, but they do not become an economic burden for families,” said Regent Kembang.
He stressed that the preservation of Balinese customs and traditions needs to be supported through policies that provide direct benefits to the public. For that reason, culture-based social programs will continue to be a priority for the local administration.
Several participants said they were greatly helped by the program. According to them, holding a ngaben independently requires substantial funds, so the administration’s facilitation can save families tens of millions of rupiah.
Meanwhile, Head of the Jembrana Tourism and Culture Agency, Anak Agung Komang Sapta Negara, explained that the 2026 Free Mass Ngaben was centered in Jembrana Subdistrict. Nevertheless, the participants came from across Jembrana Regency.
He said the location is rotated each year so that the benefits of the program can be felt more evenly by communities in each subdistrict.
“This year, 108 participants were recorded as taking part in the nyekah (post-cremation purification ritual) procession and 79 sawa in the ngelungah (purification ritual dedicated to infants or young children) procession. The peak of the ceremony will be held on Purnama Sasih Karo (Full Moon of the Second Month in the Balinese Saka calendar),” he said.
In addition to helping reduce the cost of customary ceremonies, the event also serves as a means of strengthening solidarity and mutual cooperation within the community.
