Coastal Community Help Build Self-Sustaining Lobster Feed Ecosystem in Batam

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The success of the pilot lobster-farming project at Batam Marine Aquaculture Center (BPBL) Batam in Riau Island Province owes much to active involvement from coastal communities. By developing green mussel (kerang kupang) farms in the Tanjung Uma area, the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry has built a self-sustaining natural feed ecosystem to support lobster feed needs for the cohort projected to be ready in September 2026.
Director General of Aquaculture at Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry, Tb Haeru Rahayu, said the lobster-farming model at BPBL Batam is designed as a pilot for applying grow-out technologies from hatchery seed (BBL). The ministry aims for this technology model to be replicated in other promising regions.
Haeru said the Riau Islands were chosen for development because of strong environmental carrying capacity and proximity to markets. The area is also supported by feed availability through shellfish farming developed with coastal communities.
The three-hectare farming site now includes a nursery unit, cold storage facilities, and 172 floating net cages (KJA), comprising 116 large units and 56 medium units.
Lobsters stocked in October last year have reached an average weight of 150–200 grams per individual in the large KJA and are projected to be harvest-ready in September.
He added that the hatchery technology used can produce lobster juveniles of about five grams for the grow-out stage. Farming productivity is targeted at 40 kilograms per KJA hole measuring 3 x 3 meters. “We want BBL potential to go beyond seed production and be grown into high-value lobster domestically,” said Haeru on Monday, July 27, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

The ministry recorded the first harvest from the BPBL Batam modeling scheme in September 2025, yielding about 1.7 tons of lobster. The program began in late 2024 with the release of 33,143 lobster seeds into the nursery. I
n the initial phase, survival rates exceeded 80 percent before the juveniles were moved to floating net cages for grow-out. To secure feed supply, BPBL Batam also cultivates green mussels in Tanjung Uma waters with production capacity reaching 3,600 kilograms per cycle.
The ministry notes lobster is a leading export-oriented fisheries commodity with a rising trend. Indonesia’s lobster export value increased from USD 23.93 million with production of 1,144 tons in 2023 to USD 67.83 million with production of 2,120 tons in 2024. ***
