RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Seven Indonesian Hajj pilgrims have died in Saudi Arabia due to health conditions, with most fatalities linked to heart attacks and pneumonia, Sunday, May 4, 2026.

Spokesperson for the Indonesian Ministry of Hajj, Maria Assegaf, confirmed the deaths and expressed condolences. “We pray they are granted husnul khotimah," she said.

She emphasized that pilgrims’ health remains a top priority during the pilgrimage, noting that the scorching temperatures have further strained their conditions.

Officials assured that badal hajj (proxy pilgrimage) will be carried out for the deceased, ensuring their religious obligations are fulfilled.

Medical data shows thousands of pilgrims have received outpatient care across service sectors. A total of 117 were referred to the Indonesian Hajj Health Clinic, while 141 were hospitalized in Saudi Arabia. Of those, 59 remain in intensive care.

Maria stressed that health services are being provided at all levels -- within pilgrim groups, service sectors, and referral facilities.

Temperatures in Mecca have soared to 43°C during the day, significantly raising health risks. Morning temperatures hover around 26°C, climbing sharply by midday, and easing to about 34°C at night.

Pilgrims have been urged to safeguard their health while adapting to the extreme heat, with officials advising more rest and increased water intake. (Diffa Sephiawardhani/EY)
